One week had passed since Rick had been literally ravished by his new assistant…and one week since he’d avoided eye contact with her…and one week since he’d stood her up for the dinner he had failed to attend at her house.

But how could he after what she’d done? He’d been completely blindsided by her taking possession of him—well, his dick— and his desires. He’d been embarrassed, ashamed, and taken off guard by her advances. He could only take so much, and she’d been able to see right through him. How had she done that? His love for Natalie Kinsen had ultimately been his downfall, but it had been his security blanket too. It had been the one constant in Rick Singleton’s life, the one thing that hadn’t changed in over twenty years. His job and his home had been uprooted, but his memories of Natalie were rock-solid; something he could hold on to when all else in the world was unknown. Being with her had been a small glimpse into a life he’d wanted so very badly…one he’d painstakingly had to let go of. And Carmella had rattled that unshakable blanket; she’d ripped that fucker right the hell off!

Carmella was equally as mysterious, intriguing and beautiful as Natalie, but was she any different than the other women Rick had tried to bury his memories in to? That fear had been what had stopped him from acting.

Rick had called out that very next morning, the morning following the afternoon that Carmella had gone down on him in his office. He’d felt inadequate, hesitant to see her again, and knew that he couldn’t go to her home that night, no matter how much he wanted to fuck his unrequited feelings for Natalie away with yet another woman. His cover had been blown after all, his secret out, the last of his resolve had faded. Natalie was his weakness and his weakness had been exposed for Carmella to see and wound that afternoon. Rick was a troubled soul, but it wasn’t her place to “fix” him as she’d said she needed to do.

No, he’d bailed. He couldn’t do it. He’d avoided her eyes and being alone with her since. He’d purposely left his door open, refused to be at work after hours and was practically dismissive to her. It was for her own good, right? After all, how many women had Rick had over the years that couldn’t live up to Natalie in his eyes? He’d slept with them, attempted to move on, and when they hadn’t been able to hold a candle to his “perfect Natalie” he’d gotten rid of them. No explanations. No call backs. Just radio silence. It was enough that his own life had been destroyed by his love for Natalie; no one else needed to be ruined in his path to achieve freedom from the bonds of his everlasting feelings for the woman he’d fallen for in his teen years. Carmella deserved better, hell, any woman deserved better.
